Chongqing - The Chongqing International Light Art Festival opened on Monday and gathered artist teams from 18 countries, including China, France, Guatemala, Italy, Spain, Indonesia, and Germany.

Twenty-six stunning works offered a dazzling display of light art that bridged traditional and modern aesthetics from around the world. The featured works were selected from the International 3D Mapping Competition, which invited submissions globally. Launched in July 2024, the competition received entries from 154 artist teams across 30 countries. Experts evaluated the works based on aesthetic appeal, relevance to the medium, creativity, innovation, execution, and artistic fusion. From this, 26 exceptional works from 18 countries advanced to the finals and were displayed at the festival.

On December 30, the opening ceremony of the 2024 Flowing Light International Light Art Exhibition and the International 3D Mapping Competition Award Ceremony also took place at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute (SCFAI).

Hendrik Wendler, a German art director and jury member, commented, "I am always particularly impressed by the wide range of works submitted: each one speaks its own language, combining the artists' cultures, styles, and respective mapping projects to create ever-new surprises. The entries for the Chongqing International Light Art Festival are a brilliant example of this remarkable creativity and visual language."

One standout piece, Gaze by the Chinese team Depicting Territory, uses animation to explore the "lower" areas of the city. It reveals how people, vegetation, and architecture can find light in a space that appears to exist beyond any particular layer. This powerful metaphor symbolizes the search for hope in the fog of life, leaving a deep and unforgettable impression.

Another work, The Weight of Immersion by a German-American artist team, manipulates visual illusions and ever-shifting perspectives to alter the audience's perception of space and time. Through clever camera and model control, combined with resonating stereo sound, this piece creates a unique visual experience that fully immerses viewers, making them feel as though they are part of the artwork.

"The event not only bridges academic exploration and artistic creation but also provides a platform for communication between domestic and international light artists and technical experts. It fosters seamless integration and deep resonance between academic research, aesthetic education, artistic practice, and industry development," said Jiao Xingtao, president of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.

"Each edition of the Light Art Festival continues to explore the multidimensional possibilities of art in public spaces. Over the past three years, we have received nearly 1,000 submissions from more than 30 countries and regions worldwide. The festival's influence continues to grow and has become a highly anticipated international public art event," Jiao added.

On the same day, the China-Chongqing International Light Art Academic Forum was held at SCFAI. The forum brought together artists and international competition judges from Germany, France, Hungary, Indonesia, and other countries to discuss the deep integration of light art and technology.
